UK halts trade discussions with Israel due to recent Gaza military action

UK Suspends Trade Talks with Israel Amid Escalating Conflict

The UK has put a hold on free trade discussions with Israel, having called in its ambassador for a meeting. This decision follows Prime Minister Kiel Starmer expressing his serious concerns about the military escalation happening in Gaza.

Last week, Israeli forces announced a significant new operation, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring intentions for Israel to take control of all of Gaza.

Since early March, Israel has restricted supplies of food, medical aid, and fuel entering Gaza, leading international experts to warn of a potential humanitarian crisis.

Foreign Minister David Lamy criticized the military actions, suggesting they wouldn’t help in bringing back any remaining hostages. He urged Israel to lift the blockade on aid and condemned what some officials in Israel refer to as “extremism.”

“We can’t allow this new level of degradation; it goes against the principles of our bilateral relations,” Lamy remarked during a session with lawmakers. “Honestly, it’s a blow to British values. So, I’m formally announcing the halt to negotiations on our free trade agreement with Israel.”

The previous day, the UK, in concert with France and Canada, condemned Israel’s growing military presence in Gaza and called for an end to the restrictions on aid.

This trio indicated that they would take “more concrete actions” if the attacks from Israel do not cease. “We must note the alarming escalation from Israel,” said a representative during a Congressional session.

The spokesperson reiterated the demand for a ceasefire as the only realistic path to free the hostages, voiced opposition to West Bank settlements, and pushed for a major increase in humanitarian support to Gaza.

The UK has also designated several individuals and entities in the West Bank linked to violence against Palestinians for sanctions. This move follows earlier actions taken in 2024, which targeted settler organizations accused of sponsoring violence against Palestinian communities.

Many nations regard the Jewish settlements established on land occupied since the 1967 Middle East War as illegal, a contentious issue that has persisted between Israel, Palestinians, and the international community for decades.

“We are showing once again that we will continue to oppose those committing human rights abuses,” Lamy stated.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Israel’s military operations have resulted in massive destruction in Gaza, displacing nearly all 2.3 million residents and claiming more than 53,000 lives, according to health authorities there.

Netanyahu has described the situation as a “war of civilizations,” emphasizing his commitment to protecting Israel through precise measures until achieving full victory.
