House Democrats Accuse DOJ of Unfair Charges
House Democrats have claimed that the Trump administration’s Justice Department (DOJ) is unfairly accusing them of attacking federal agents during a confrontation outside an immigration and customs enforcement facility in New Jersey back in early May.
On Monday, U.S. lawyer Alina Haba made a statement on social media, suggesting that the charges against a Democrat named McQuiver imply that House Democrats “assaulted, obstructed, and interfered with law enforcement” during the incident. Haba remarked, “No one is above the law—politicians included.”
Some House Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have expressed dissatisfaction with the DOJ’s decision to charge McQuiver. Jeffries stated that the charges are “extreme, morally bankrupt, and not based on laws or facts.” He emphasized that Democratic leaders are “not intimidated” by the Trump administration, asserting, “not now, not ever.”
Representative Brad Schneider from Illinois, who leads the liberal New Democrats coalition, also voiced support for McQuiver. He said, “We continue to defend” McQuiver and urged, “Please don’t back down; we refuse to be silent.” Schneider insisted he believes McQuiver has done nothing wrong or illegal.
Texas Representative Greg Casar, who chairs the Progressive Caucus and is a colleague of McQuiver, stated that the DOJ’s claims against lawmakers are “essentially baseless.” He added that the CPC stands firmly with McQuiver, highlighting, “We will pursue all legislative measures to defend the rights of elected representatives in the face of the law.”
A DOJ spokesperson remarked, “Attacks against federal law enforcement will never be tolerated. No one is beyond the law, and I fully support U.S. lawyer Haba’s mission to ensure justice.” Neither McQuiver’s office nor those of Jeffries, Schneider, or Casar responded to requests for comment.
