Union Representative Warns of Execution by Firing Squad for Democrats Against Graham Platner

Controversial Threat from Maine Labor Union Official

A representative for the Maine branch of a major labor union made troubling remarks on social media, threatening to “shoot” any Democrat who does not back Graham Platner’s upcoming campaign in November.

Andy O’Brien, the communications director for the American Federation of Labor and Industrial Organizations of Maine (AFL-CIO), shared a post imagining executing Democrats unwilling to support Platner. This comment was triggered by an editorial in The Hill by a Democratic strategist who highlighted the party’s lack of response to Platner’s controversial reputation. The situation has escalated, especially given Platner’s past, including allegations and a history of problematic rhetoric.

In reaction to the editorial, O’Brien posted on social media, saying, “When the revolution comes, we’ll be the first to hit the wall,” which certainly raises eyebrows.

The writer of the op-ed, Laurie A. Watkins, stated that while she’s spent much of her career advocating for causes she believes in, she finds it troubling that some feel obligated to support candidates simply due to their party affiliation, especially when character is in question. “There’s a growing expectation that when the stakes feel high enough, we should set aside questions of character,” she lamented.

O’Brien’s background includes serving as a state representative from 2008 to 2012, along with his current role at the labor organization. He is known for his advocacy on labor rights and his criticism of Republican policies, particularly in education and issues related to race. He’s also penned pieces addressing the fight against racism and the importance of unions in fostering inclusivity.

Platner’s candidacy has sparked intense debate within Democratic circles, garnering both support and criticism. In the upcoming election, he will compete against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. Recent polls show Platner with a slight edge, leading Collins by two percentage points.
