Eric Swalwell urges heightened action after another Democrat is charged with allegedly attacking an ICE officer

Democrat Eric Swalwell from California has called on his colleagues to “go once well” following allegations against fellow Democrat Rep. Ramonica McQuiver from New Jersey. She stands accused of assaulting an officer at an ICE detention center.

The charges, announced by US Attorney Alina Haba from New Jersey, state that McQuiver “attacked, obstructed, and interfered with law enforcement.” McQuiver has voiced her belief that the accusations are “purely political.”

“We must revisit everything we previously did to demonstrate dissent and elevate our voices,” Swalwell remarked on Monday. He claimed that “the red lines have been crossed,” adding further that this is merely the beginning of a troubling trend where political opponents face legal challenges.

McQuiver has garnered support not only from Swalwell but from others in her party as well. Texas Rep. Maxwell Frost asserted that the charges appear aimed at “curbing dissent.” He described this as a significant overreach by what he termed an “authoritarian regime” intent on quelling objections.

In the meantime, President Donald Trump, along with his administration, has asserted that the accusations are legitimate, not politically motivated. Trump has even suggested that McQuiver was “out of control” during the incident, reiterating the importance of law and order.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem emphasized that if someone assaults law enforcement officers, they will face the full weight of the law. “We appreciate the courageous work of ICE officers,” she stated.
