Demand for Apology Over Ice Comments
Acting Ice Director Todd Lyons has called for an apology from former Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz, who referred to President Donald Trump’s administration as “a modern Gestapo.” This remark was made during Waltz’s speech at the University of Minnesota Law School, where he characterized Trump as a “tyrant” while discussing urgent issues with his students.
Some might think that Waltz’s comments were too political for such an occasion, but he expressed that it was essential to uphold his oath. He likened the deportation of illegal immigrants to actions taken by the Nazi secret police in the past, indicating a serious concern over current practices.
Waltz described a grim picture, claiming that illegal immigrants are being rounded up by unmarked vans and masked officers, depriving them of the chance to defend themselves or say goodbye to their loved ones. His remarks drew sharp criticism from Lyons, who issued a statement the following Tuesday highlighting the significance of National Police Week.
Lyons stated that references to Ice agents as “the modern-day Gestapo” are deeply offensive, particularly during a time when law enforcement officials are honored for their service. He also noted a troubling increase in assaults against Ice officials, attributing this rise partly to the politically charged comments made by figures like Waltz.
He urged Waltz to refrain from using such dehumanizing language, pointing out that it contributes to a perilous environment for Ice officers. In a related note, figures like White House Deputy Chief of Policy Staff Stephen Miller echoed these concerns, suggesting that Waltz’s language could potentially incite violence.
Overall, the discourse surrounding immigration continues to ignite intense debates, with reactions from various politicians emphasizing the stakes involved for both law enforcement and communities affected by these issues.
