Americans Set for Low Gas Prices This Memorial Day
Those hitting the road for Memorial Day can expect to see the lowest gas prices since 2003. According to the fuel savings platform GasBuddy, the national average price for gasoline is projected to be around $3.08 per gallon during the holiday, marking a slight dip from 2021.
This trend is likely to persist. Currently, gas prices hover near $3.02 per gallon between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with expectations that they’ll fall below $3 shortly.
This price reduction might encourage 69% of Americans who are gearing up for summer road trips.
“The American road trip culture remains resilient,” said GasBuddy in their summer travel survey release for 2025.
Last year, the average price of gasoline was $3.58 per gallon on Memorial Day. The lower prices this year can be attributed to increased oil production, which has effectively decreased crude oil prices. Currently, Brent crude barrels, which serve as the global oil price benchmark, are trading at $65.07, a notable drop from $83.71 a year ago.
GasBuddy states that these are the lowest Memorial Day gas prices since 2003, excluding 2020, when both gas and crude oil prices plummeted due to travel restrictions amid the pandemic.
For President Donald Trump, low gas prices are seen as a significant political win. Throughout last year’s campaign, he emphasized his administration’s commitment to lowering energy costs. Democrats, including Corey Booker, have criticized Trump over his promises regarding energy prices, with Booker even using some colorful language to express his doubts.
In the meantime, Trump can take a moment to smile, knowing that Americans are enjoying affordable gasoline just in time for summer road trips.
