Cowboys Owner Comments on NFL Coaching Program Suspension
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t specifically attribute the suspension of the NFL’s coaching accelerator program to President Trump’s criticism of the initiative. However, he indicated that it has made him more “conscious” of league matters.
This coaching accelerator program, which began in 2022, was created to help minority coaches connect with league executives and team owners during the NFL’s spring meetings. Despite its initial goals, the league has opted to postpone this year’s program until next spring.
“The president’s focus on it has made us all more aware,” Jones stated.
He also referenced a positive Supreme Court ruling in 2023 that could have implications for league owners.
“I didn’t hear it from anyone directly, but this is clearly the reaction,” Jones remarked. “If you believe the Supreme Court decision isn’t influencing decisions across the nation, I think you’re mistaken. Honestly, I think the current environment is shaped more by that decision than by what the president is saying.”
Despite the delay of the coaching accelerator program, Steelers owner Art Rooney II assured that the league intends to continue promoting its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative.
“I understand some will perceive this as backing down,” Rooney explained. “But that’s not the case. There’s not much I can do about that perception, except to express my dissatisfaction with our current position. We are still aware of what needs to be done.”
