Charges Filed Against Teacher for Alleged Sexual Abuse
Police have made an arrest following allegations that a teacher sexually abused a 12-year-old student. The accused, Vincent Weaver, a 29-year-old art teacher and dance coach at George Washington Carver Academy, faces charges of criminal sexual conduct.
Weaver was charged on May 16 after reports surfaced of repeated incidents occurring over a span of four months on school grounds. This came after a report urge from the victim on May 15. Following this, there was an internal investigation that led to his suspension on May 2.
Interestingly, just a day after his suspension, Weaver attempted to attend an off-campus student dance event disguised as an elderly woman and wearing a surgical mask, despite being barred from such activities.
Interim police chief James McMahon addressed the media, stating they received information regarding Weaver’s involvement in choreographing the dance show at a local university. “The event happened, and we knew that people wanted to attend,” he noted. “However, the school staff had advised him not to go due to the ongoing claims against him, something he was aware of.”
School security grew suspicious and alerted the police upon noticing “limping” individuals at the event.
Weaver was arrested there and charged with first-degree sexual conduct, second-degree sexual conduct, and indecent exposure. He is currently held on a bond of $250,000 due to being considered a potential flight risk and a danger to the public.
Coach Sylvia Brown indicated that Weaver, who had only been hired earlier in 2023, was terminated following the investigation’s findings. “George Washington Carver Academy took immediate action upon recognizing the incident, alerting law enforcement and suspending implicated staff,” she said. “Our focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and their families.”
