Father Reacts to Shooting of University Student in South Carolina
Charlotte, North Carolina – A University of North Carolina student’s father expressed his outrage upon discovering the extensive criminal history of the man accused of shooting his daughter during what authorities labeled a “random” robbery. The incident occurred earlier this month while Logan Federico, a 22-year-old from Waxhaw, was visiting a friend at the University of South Carolina in Columbia on the night of May 2nd to 3rd.
Early on May 3, Alexander Dicky, a 30-year-old with a lengthy criminal background, allegedly entered the house where Logan was staying. He reportedly stole several credit and debit cards before fatally shooting her. Police Chief Skip Holbrook referred to the crime as random during a press conference on May 5.
Logan’s father, Stephen Federico, recounted that plans had changed last minute, which is why his daughter was at USC. “She was supposed to be home, but… I guess they decided to stay the extra night,” he said. It’s clear there was a mix-up, but that doesn’t change the heartbreak.
On that fateful Saturday, Logan’s mother, Melissa Federico, was in the kitchen when two officers arrived to share the devastating news. Stephen was out playing golf; he recalled the moment vividly: “I heard a scream from Melissa. I knew something was wrong. She eventually told me Logan was gone.”
Stephen recalled feeling a wave of panic and anger when he learned about Dicky’s criminal history, which involved nearly 40 previous arrests in North Carolina. “It’s just shocking. It feels unreal,” he said. “Why was this man out on the streets?”
Logan was studying at Central Piedmont Community College and worked two jobs, dreaming of becoming a teacher. “She had this incredible ability to connect with people,” Stephen reflected. “Everyone loved her.”
Regarding the incident, police revealed Dicky had driven a stolen car into the Cypress Street neighborhood, where he burglarized multiple homes before reaching Logan’s location. Upon finding her sleeping, he shot her with a stolen weapon.
Authorities discovered Logan dead shortly after 11 AM. Police clarified that she was not the intended target but a tragic victim of circumstances. The following day, Dicky attempted to use a stolen credit card.
Police quickly identified him as a suspect and managed to apprehend him after he allegedly fled a residence while trying to evade capture.
“We will make sure justice is served,” Stephen affirmed, stating his commitment to attending Dicky’s court appearances, which began recently. He expressed gratitude towards the local police for their swift action in the case. “They became my friends. They’re amazing people.”
Dicky faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder and robbery, among others, for which he could face life in prison. His next court date is set for July 25.
