Florida Teacher Faces Deportation Over Lewd Allegations
A middle school teacher in Florida is facing the prospect of deportation after being accused of soliciting nude photos from students.
Jonathan Lowe, a 45-year-old math teacher originally from Jamaica, was arrested last week after allegedly showing explicit images of himself to a 15-year-old student. Federal immigration officials have been alerted about his arrest, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident reportedly took place at Explorer K-8 in Spring Hill. During a planning period, Lowe was in his classroom when the student mentioned previous photos they had taken together, prompting Lowe to show some pictures.
The sheriff’s department indicated that while browsing his phone, Lowe paused on an image that the student thought was of Lowe’s genitals.
Lowe allegedly then instructed the student to go to the bathroom and take a picture of his own genitals, which raises serious concerns.
When questioned, Lowe confirmed he had nude images on his phone but did not disclose whether he had shared them with the student, as reported by the police.
He was apprehended at his residence in Spring Hill and charged with distributing obscene material to a minor using a two-way device, which is categorized as a felony in Florida.
Authorities have notified the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the sheriff’s office, his arrest could lead to deportation proceedings once he is passed over to ICE.
Lowe held a J-1 visa, which permits foreigners to come to the U.S. for educational and exchange programs. He is currently held at the Hernando County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.
Following the incident, he was terminated from his position the next day and is barred from returning to the school where he taught grades 6 to 8.
At this point, police have stated that there are no other known victims connected to this case.
