Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Relations with Student
A 61-year-old educator has confessed to engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old student, who had reportedly suffered abuse from another teacher at their Christian school in Georgia.
Shelley Delle Mauldin received a sentence of 12 years in prison, but the actual time served is suspended for 25 years. This incident led to the closure of Nathanael Green Academy in Siloam, as reported.
Mauldin attributed her actions to a history of child sexual abuse, describing a “dark place” she was in, and argued that she deserves to be released from custody.
Prosecutors, however, were hoping for a lengthier sentence of 18 years, emphasizing the troubling aspects of an adult engaging with a minor.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed with the court’s ruling,” said Prosecutor T. Wright Barksdale. “The age difference, the fact that it involved a teacher and a student—it’s just incredibly serious.” He also mentioned that the crimes happened over a month and across various locations, which added to the severity of the case.
Despite Mauldin’s admission, prosecutors noted that her subsequent honesty after previously deceiving law enforcement offered her some leniency.
Her arrest followed that of another teacher at the school, Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 26, who is facing similar charges for engaging with the same student. A jury trial for her is on the calendar for next month.
The dual arrests led to the school’s closure, which had been operational since 1959.
The victim has claimed that the institution failed to safeguard him. “They exploited my position as a teacher,” he expressed in remarks shared through his attorney, pointing to a lack of oversight as a key issue.
