Mizan, an Iranian judicial news service, reported that the individual responsible for a deadly shooting at the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was executed on Wednesday.
This incident, which occurred in January 2023, resulted in the death of the security chief at the embassy, significantly worsening relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, with Baku condemning the act as “terrorism.”
According to judicial sources, the assault was driven by “personal reasons,” as Mizan stated.
During the trial, the accused claimed, “My wife was at the embassy in Tehran and believed she wanted to see me. That’s why I went there with a Kalashnikov.”
The relationship between these two neighboring nations has grown increasingly strained, with Azerbaijan accusing Iran of mistreating its Azeri ethnic population. Meanwhile, Iran has raised concerns over Azerbaijan’s close ties with Israel and worries about possible changes in borders stemming from the recent military clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Last month, Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian visited Baku, expressing hopes to collaboratively address ongoing issues and enhance bilateral ties.
