Virginia Representative Gerry Connolly, 75, passes away after fighting cancer.

Virginia Congressman Jerry Connolly passed away on Wednesday morning after battling esophageal cancer, as confirmed by his family.

He was 75 years old.

Connolly had been a prominent Democrat on the House Oversight Committee until last month when he stepped down, allowing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to take the position he had held.

His passing marks the third time this year that a House Democrat has died while in office, which coincides with a challenging political climate for House Republicans as they struggle to advance President Trump’s major initiatives.

“Jerry dedicated his life to helping others and enhancing our community. He always advocated for the marginalized and those without a voice,” said his family in a statement.

“We were lucky to share Gerry with Northern Virginia for nearly four decades; it was not just a role for him but a joy, a purpose, and a passion.”

Last month, Connolly announced his decision to step down from his leadership role on the Oversight Committee following the recurrence of his cancer. The Democrats are currently working to identify his successor.
