NWS transmitters not functioning in regions experiencing heavy weather

While some national weather radio transmitters lack adequate coverage, numerous regions are still anticipated to face severe weather conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Birmingham, Alabama, has announced a suspension due to essential updates for their advanced weather interactive processing systems.

These systems, known as AWIP, gather and present weather and water data, which is crucial for issuing alerts and warnings to the public.

The NWS stated, “During the update, a forecast operation will be coordinated with the Service Backup Office in Peachtree, Georgia, to reduce any possible service interruptions.”

“We want to reassure the public that there will be no effect on weather products, advisory forecasts, or warning services during this timeframe,” they further clarified.

Kentucky, for instance, has recently faced several tornadoes across states like Texas and Iowa, maintaining a heightened risk level.

This update is scheduled to occur from May 19 to May 21.
