Debate Sparks Over Headphone Etiquette in Australia
Australian comedian Will Gibb has ignited a lively discussion across the country following a somewhat “rude” encounter at a takeaway restaurant.
In a recent social media clip, Gibb shared his experience of walking into the eatery while wearing headphones and placing an order at the counter.
After greeting the staff and ordering his meal, he noticed that his headphones were still in. He explained, “I have earphones in and I’m watching this guy prepare my food. I could see he had it bagged up, so I glanced at my phone for a moment.”
He then looked around, feeling uncertain that the food was meant for him. “Then I noticed the guy at the counter staring at me,” he said.
Upon making eye contact, he removed his headphones, and the server remarked, “I wasn’t going to worry about it. I mean, your earphones are in.”
“I was totally caught off guard,” Gibb added.
This clip has captured the attention of many, racking up over 182,000 views, with opinions split among viewers.
- “That server is a total legend for holding his ground,” a viewer commented.
- “I personally think it’s rude to leave earphones in while ordering,” another countered.
- “It’s just common courtesy. If you’re ordering, you should take them out and engage with the staff,” someone else added.
- “I’m on the staff’s side here. No sympathy for him,” another said.
Conversely, many defended Gibb’s choice to keep his headphones in.
- “People need to chill. It’s not that serious,” one user remarked.
- “Honestly, I’ve worked in hospitality, and I would rather just complete the order than worry about teaching someone a lesson,” another shared.
- “It’s absurd that there are people who disagree with him. Just acknowledge when food is ready—no need for drama,” suggested another commentator.
Some voices even labeled the insistence on removing headphones as discriminatory.
- “I often wear headphones while shopping,” one expressed.
- “For those of us with sensory issues, it’s really distressing to be without them in public,” another commented.
- “Using my earbuds helps me focus better; I’m honestly surprised by this response,” a third added.
