Islanders Approach Brendan Shanahan for Front Office Role
The Islanders have received approval to engage in discussions with Brendan Shanahan as they search for a new front-office leader.
Shanahan, a notable figure in the NHL, is finishing his contract with the Maple Leafs, where he currently serves as president. His name has gained traction in the wake of Toronto’s elimination from the playoffs. It’s an interesting situation, to say the least.
If there’s any connection with the Islanders, it’s through his relationship with CEO John Collins. This would mark the second time Shanahan has taken the reins of a front office from Lou Lamoriello, the first being when he joined the Maple Leafs nearly a decade ago.
Over at the Maple Leafs, Shanahan has guided the team to an impressive streak of nine consecutive playoff appearances, giving them the longest active streak in the NHL. However, it’s worth noting that they haven’t made it past the second round during that time, which, well, feels a bit frustrating for fans.
Meanwhile, the Islanders officially announced on April 22 that Lamoriello would not be returning as GM and president, leaving a significant gap in the organization that needs filling.
The Islanders already have some candidates in mind to step up as GM. It seems like they’re moving quickly to address this, which makes sense considering the uncertainty surrounding the franchise.
Interviews have already taken place with Marc Bergevin, Mathieu Darche, and Jarmo Kekalainen. Reports suggest that both Bergevin and Darche are planning to reconnect with the team for further discussions.
Fun fact: Shanahan, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player in 2013, racked up 656 goals and 1,354 points during his 1,524 games across 20 seasons with various teams. He also clinched three Stanley Cups and was recognized as a three-time All-Star.
