On Wednesday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill proposed by Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader from New York.
Through unanimous consent, Schumer aimed to advance legislation that would effectively prohibit the use of foreign-owned aircraft as presidential transport.
“This gift is completely unacceptable,” Schumer remarked on the Senate floor. “It’s clear daytime bribery. …It’s about safeguarding our national security and avoiding wasteful spending of taxpayer money on unnecessary transactions.”
He further criticized Donald Trump for endorsing what he described as corrupt practices, urging the GOP to back the bill.
Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas impeded the initiative.
The proposed President’s Air Transport Security Act specifically forbids the use of taxpayer funds for altering aircraft designated for presidential use.
This effort is part of a broader strategy by Democrats to tackle potential issues related to the aircraft in question. The jet, valued at $400 million, is set to transition to the Department of Defense, where it will function as the next Air Force aircraft for the foreseeable future. The Pentagon officially received the jet on Wednesday.
After Trump’s presidency, the aircraft will be relocated to his presidential library.
Democrats expressed outrage over the gift, viewing it as a clear example of corruption.
Despite this, Senate Republicans were not quickly rallying around Trump in support of the matter. Several members raised concerns regarding safety and security, particularly in light of Qatar’s historical backing of Hamas, coupled with the appearance of quid pro quo.
There is also some confusion regarding the rationale behind this arrangement, considering the high costs associated with modifying aircraft for a limited operational period before they are transferred to Trump’s library.
