Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts Owner, Has Died

Jim Irsay, the well-known owner of the Indianapolis Colts, has sadly passed away.

The team announced the heartbreaking news on social media Wednesday evening, stating that Irsay died “in peace this afternoon in sleep.”

Irsay’s journey in football began at a young age. His father, Robert Irsay, acquired the Baltimore Colts when Jim was just 12. As a child, he often found himself on the field as a ball boy and even took on roles in the ticket office. After completing his education at SMU, he joined the Colts’ staff and became the team’s general manager in early 1984, shortly after the franchise moved to Indianapolis. Remarkably, Irsay became the youngest general manager in NFL history at the age of 24.

After his father’s death in 1997, Irsay made another significant mark by becoming the youngest owner in the NFL at just 37 years old.

In the statement released by the team, Irsay reflected on their successes, saying, “We led the Colts to a series of division titles and led the city to its first Super Bowl Championship.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also expressed condolences following the news of Irsay’s passing.

Jim Irsay was 65 years old.
