Trump Hosts Florida Gators Basketball Team at the White House
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, President Donald Trump welcomed the Florida Gators men’s basketball team to the White House. This visit came after their recent triumph at the NCAA tournament last month.
The Gators clinched the championship by defeating the Houston Cougars 65-53 in the finals, emerging victorious in what basketball fans refer to as “The Big Dance.”
During the celebration in the East Room, Trump expressed his pleasure at hosting the team. He congratulated head coach Todd Golden, commending him for his work throughout the season and the inspiration he provided to the players.
Trump shared stories with several team members who played significant roles in the SEC tournament and in the national final against Houston. One memorable moment was with Gators Guard Alijah Martin, who secured the win with two crucial free throws during a tense moment in the championship match.
Trump lightheartedly asked Martin if he was nervous during that critical point. Martin smiled and assured him he was confident. The President quipped back, teasing that if he hadn’t made those shots, they probably wouldn’t be there at the White House.
As the ceremony concluded, Coach Golden presented Trump with a personalized Gators jersey featuring the number 47 and a basketball signed by the team.
In his speech, Golden highlighted the team’s meritocratic approach, drawing parallels to Trump’s vision for the country. He stated, “President, I want you to think of our program just like we think of the U.S. We value hard work and team spirit.” He emphasized that no matter one’s background, a commitment to the team and hard work is what truly matters at the University of Florida.
