Man falls to his death after FDNY ladder collapses during Brooklyn fire: video

Tragic Fall From Fire Escape in Brooklyn

A 53-year-old man from Brooklyn tragically fell to his death while being evacuated from a fire in his Sunset Park apartment on Monday morning, as captured in shocking footage reviewed by the Post.

The incident occurred around 7 AM at 3902 Ninth Ave., where a bystander recorded video showing the man attempting to escape through a third-floor window, with smoke swirling behind him.

As he reached for the ladder, it suddenly retracted, sending him into a free fall over the deli awning below, before he hit the sidewalk, as seen in the video.

The man, identified as Ashiq Hussain, an Uber driver originally from Pakistan, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center but was unfortunately declared dead shortly after, according to a spokesperson from the NYPD.

Meanwhile, the firefighter on the ladder managed to hold on, even as the ladder malfunctioned.

According to police, two other residents required treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries acquired during the fire.

Investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with FDNY officials looking into what went wrong with the ladder during the rescue attempt.

Hussain’s family is demanding answers, particularly regarding the ladder’s malfunction and whether it was securely locked. His cousin, Mazar Iqbal, expressed a strong sense of blame, saying, “I’m going to blame the fire department for this.”

He added, “They were really wrong. They took the family’s heads. They ruined their lives.”

FDNY is actively investigating the incident, and the ladder involved has been taken out of service.

A departmental spokesman acknowledged awareness of the tragic event, stating that an investigation into the circumstances was underway, involving various agencies.

Firefighters are continuing their work as the investigation unfolds.
