Authorities have confirmed that two staff members from the Israeli Embassy were shot and killed during an event in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night. Tar Naim Cohen, a spokesperson for the embassy, verified that the diplomats were shot at close range during a Jewish event at the museum, which was identified as being held in a post X format by the American Jewish Commission.
“We have complete confidence in law enforcement at both local and federal levels to apprehend the shooters and ensure the safety of Israeli representatives and Jewish communities throughout the country,” Cohen stated.
A man and a woman lost their lives in this tragic incident, but further details about their identities haven’t been released yet.
In a related note, Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem stated that the Department of Homeland Security is currently investigating the situation and aims to provide more information soon.
“Let’s keep the families of the victims in our thoughts. We’re committed to bringing those responsible for this act to justice,” Noem expressed on X.
The Metropolitan Police are actively investigating the shooting, which took place near 3rd Avenue and F Street Northwest, right by the capital’s Jewish Museum.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, remarked that the shooting reflects a “despicable act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” He added, “This attack on diplomats and the Jewish community has crossed a serious line. I trust that US authorities will respond decisively to this crime, and Israel will continue its efforts to protect its citizens and representatives globally.”
This is an evolving story, and updates are expected.
