Small Aircraft Crash in San Diego Neighborhood
A small plane crashed in a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday morning, causing extensive damage to homes and vehicles.
The Cessna 550 went down around 4 AM in the Murphy Canyon area, leaving destruction in its wake. This type of aircraft typically seats six to eight people, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not confirmed how many were aboard at the time of the crash.
Initial reports indicate that the plane struck a pole, lost its wings, and then crashed into a house, sending debris soaring into the air. Local authorities reported that around 15 homes were impacted. Video evidence shows some houses severely affected by the blaze, with at least three cars burned and one roof partially collapsed.
The crash occurred near Montgomery Gibbs Executive Airport, which is situated north of the city. It drew a large response from police and fire departments.
Debris from the aircraft was evident, scattered along the nearby road, with several other vehicles also caught in the fire, still smoldering even as daylight began to break.
Authorities are currently investigating the causes of the crash.
One witness described hearing multiple loud explosions followed by flames. “You just look out the window and see the big flames… so big, everywhere,” he recounted.
Due to the situation, several roads in the vicinity will remain closed for an extended period as emergency services continue their work.
