House Republicans celebrate after passing Trump’s ‘one significant, impressive bill’

House Republicans Celebrate Passage of Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill”

House Republicans were in high spirits Thursday morning after successfully passing a significant piece of legislation that President Donald Trump dubbed the “one big, beautiful bill.” House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana expressed his excitement, proclaiming, “It’s finally become an American morning.”

The bill, titled the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed narrowly with a vote of 215 to 214. Notably, all Democrats and two Republicans—Thomas Massey from Kentucky and Warren Davidson from Ohio—opposed it, while Andy Harris from Maryland voted “present.”

Johnson emphasized the bill’s importance, stating, “Today, the House has passed generational legislation that truly shapes the nation. It aims to cut spending for families and job creators, secure our borders, unleash American energy, restore peace through strength, and make government more efficient for all Americans.”

This legislation marks a critical achievement not just for Trump but also for House Republicans who have reconciled various policy disagreements to fulfill key campaign promises. These include extensions and enhancements of tax cuts from 2017, along with reforms related to overtime and social security taxes.

Looking ahead, Johnson indicated that they anticipate swift action in the Senate, highlighting a commitment to keep pushing the “one big beautiful bill” forward, hoping to send it to Trump’s desk by July 4th.

House leadership expressed gratitude to their Republican colleagues for their unity in passing the bill. However, Johnson did criticize Democrats, claiming they have made it clear they are not interested in supporting efforts to get America back on track. He remarked that if the bill faced rejection multiple times, they are still determined to see it through.

Trump took to social media to celebrate the moment, thanking Johnson and House leaders for their efforts, as well as all Republicans who supported what he described as a historic bill. “Now it’s time for our friends in the Senate to get to work and get this bill to my desk as soon as possible!” he remarked.

The multi-trillion-dollar bill contains provisions designed to advance Trump’s “America First” agenda, including tax reductions, border security, military enhancements, and reforms to Medicaid, all while aiming to cut government spending by approximately $1.5 trillion. The U.S. is still grappling with over $36 trillion in debt, having spent $1.05 trillion more than it took in during 2025, according to Treasury data.

On a cautionary note, Republicans warned against underestimating their ability to deliver for the American public in crucial moments.

During the lead-up to the vote, House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries took what he called “30 minutes of Magic Minute” to express opposition to the bill. Johnson responded by condemning the Democrats’ stance, stating, “The Democrats voted to put Americans last. That’s a shame.” He expressed gratitude towards House Republicans and President Trump.

Still, significant challenges lie ahead for the “one big, beautiful bill.” The Senate needs to ratify its version, and Republican leaders are hoping to finalize it by the anticipated deadline. Some senators have already shown hesitance regarding proposed cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs, and there are concerns that raising the state and local tax deduction cap could incite resistance from those representing blue states like New York and California.

Senate Democrats have also voiced strong criticism of the bill. They argue it undermines healthcare access and threatens the welfare of vulnerable communities, labeling it anything but beautiful.
