Russo Leads Arsenal into Champions League Final
Arsenal is set to take on a formidable challenge at Estádio José Alvalade as they prepare for their first Champions League final since 2007, facing a distinctive Barcelona team.
Alessia Russo, playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s offense, has the chance to create history and solidify her legacy on this significant stage.
When Russo switched from Manchester United to Arsenal in 2023, expectations were understandably high. She had impressed during the 2022 Euros, scoring four goals in the semi-finals, including a remarkable back heel that went viral. Continuing her impressive form, she netted goals in England’s World Cup quarter and semi-finals against Colombia and Australia.
Upon her free transfer to Arsenal, United had reportedly turned down two world-record bids from the Gunners for her services earlier that January. It was evident that Russo was emerging as one of the most talented strikers in the Women’s Super League. Surprisingly, she adapted quickly to life in North London, and her impact this season has been substantial. Notably, her two goals against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals played a crucial role in Arsenal overcoming a two-goal deficit from the first leg.
Arsenal’s manager, Rene Sleggers, has praised Russo’s determination and skill following their recent victory. He described her as “a talented individual who is steadfast in her purpose.” He believes Russo will contribute significantly to the team’s success, especially after the departure of Jonas Edeval, who had struggled for goals during his tenure. “She wants to make a difference and truly believes in her ability,” Sleggers noted. “Her consistency is remarkable; regardless of the situation, she shows up to deliver.”
This season, Russo has netted 12 league goals, matching her previous tally, which earned her the golden boot—an award she shares with Kadijashaw. Additionally, she received recognition from the Football Writers’ Association as the Women’s Soccer Player of the Year.
As Sleggers acknowledged, Russo’s contributions go beyond just scoring. He highlighted her character, stating, “Her humility and eagerness to learn set her apart. When you have players like her, it’s likely that they’ll maximize their potential, which is precisely what she’s achieving consistently.”
Currently, Russo is tied for second place in the Champions League scoring chart with her teammate Mariona Caldentey, trailing behind Barcelona’s Clàudia Pina.
Looking at Russo’s performance this season, there’s been notable growth in her gameplay, particularly in her movements, hold-up play, and defensive work rate. Understanding the nuances of playing as a No. 9 has become clearer for her as she gains more experience. “As you age, your positional awareness improves. It’s often about those minute details,” she shared.
Perhaps the key to her success this season could simply be her happiness on the field. “I genuinely love playing soccer,” Russo stated. “I’ve mentioned it before, but I always perform at my best when I’m enjoying the game.”
While it’s hard to say whether the second half of the season will yield the same level of success, one thing is certain: watching Russo shine this year has been a delight. Regardless of the match outcome in the Champions League final, her achievements this season position her well for the upcoming euros this summer.
