Accusations Against Columbia University by Trump Administration
The Trump administration has accused Columbia University of breaching federal laws concerning what they call “deliberate indifference” to anti-Israel protests that have unfolded on campus since October 7, 2023.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Civil Rights Office (OCR), Columbia has contravened Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act by not adequately addressing “Jewish Student Harassment” over the past 19 months.
Title VI prohibits discrimination by recipients of federal funding based on race, color, or national origin. This includes discrimination against anyone on the grounds of their recognized Jewish or Israeli identity.
The HHS claims that the university has failed to protect Jewish students adequately, allowing a “hostile environment” to persist due to the actions of certain students.
Columbia has reportedly become a focal point for anti-Israel and pro-Hamas rallies following violent attacks against Israel in October 2023. The OCR noted that the university “failed” in various ways to combat anti-Semitism, which includes neglecting to follow its own policies and improperly addressing complaints raised by Jewish students.
Furthermore, the office criticized Columbia for not enforcing its own rules regarding the time, location, and manner of campus protests, especially concerning academic settings, dormitories, and libraries.
“Jewish students have endured a hostile environment for over 19 months, impacting their education and overall well-being,” stated the acting director of OCR at HHS. He encouraged Columbia to collaborate with them to implement meaningful changes that would safeguard Jewish students.
This announcement comes on the heels of several Columbia alumni burning their diplomas in protest against the detention of former student Mahmoud Khalil, who faces the threat of deportation by the Trump administration due to allegations of leading anti-Israel movements.
Additionally, Columbia has faced significant financial setbacks, losing $400 million following budget cuts imposed on universities accused of perpetuating anti-Semitism on campus by the Trump administration.
In response to these OCR findings, Columbia has indicated a willingness to engage with the Trump administration to address issues of anti-Semitism on its campus. A spokesperson mentioned that they recognize these discoveries as part of ongoing discussions with the government.
