Prebiotic sodas are gaining traction, often touted as a digestive-friendly and anti-inflammatory choice compared to regular sodas.
These beverages typically use low-sugar, fiber-rich sweeteners sourced from inulin, chicory root, and other plants, distinguishing them from standard sodas and diet options.
While wellness experts laud prebiotic sodas for their potential benefits to digestive health, some caution that the scientific backing for these claims is still developing.
For instance, inulin can lead to digestive issues for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome, according to studies from the National Library of Medicine.
Prebiotic Soda Sales Reach $777 Million
Despite mixed reviews, sales of prebiotic sodas are skyrocketing.
In just three years, revenue has surged from $33 million to an impressive $777 million, as noted by industry insights.
“A regular soda can contain over 50 grams of sugar, while a Poppy or Olipop might have only around five grams,” nutritionist Courtney Swan commented. “So, I think the trend toward lower sugar sodas is here to stay.”
Recently, Pepsi made headlines by acquiring the brand Poppi for over $1 billion, aiming to expand its reach in the functional beverage market.
Cannabis Drinks as Alcohol Alternatives
Furthermore, drinks infused with CBD or THC are rising in popularity as substitutes for traditional alcoholic beverages.
Experts recommend that consumers scrutinize labels and consult medical professionals before experimenting with these drinks, given the variability in regulations and ingredients across different products.
