Trump Declares Significant Prisoner Exchange Between Russia and Ukraine

Russia-Ukraine Prisoner Exchanges Begin

On Friday, Russia and Ukraine initiated significant prisoner exchanges, marking their first in-person meeting in over three years, according to a Ukrainian military source.

US President Donald Trump mentioned that the exchange had already been completed, though neither Kiev nor Moscow confirmed this. Military insiders suggested that the exchanges are still happening.

During two-hour discussions in Istanbul last week, both parties agreed to trade 1,000 prisoners but did not reach an agreement on a ceasefire that Trump had proposed. Previous swaps have typically been facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.

This prisoner exchange appears to be the only tangible progress toward peace, as both sides acknowledged during their talks in Istanbul.

Trump expressed optimism on social media, congratulating both parties and hinting that this could lead to larger developments.

It’s believed that hundreds of thousands of soldiers from both sides have been injured or killed in what is considered Europe’s most lethal conflict since World War II. However, neither side has provided reliable casualty figures. Additionally, tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians have reportedly lost their lives due to Russian artillery fire and surrounding forces.

Ukraine has indicated it may be open to a 30-day ceasefire soon, yet Russia, which began its invasion in 2022, has stated it will not halt its operations until certain conditions are met—conditions that Ukrainian representatives have dubbed “non-starters.”

Trump, having adjusted US policies towards Ukraine to acknowledge some Russian narratives, indicated that if Moscow obstructs the peace agreement, he might consider tightening sanctions. However, after a call with Putin on Monday, he chose not to take immediate action.

Moscow has expressed a desire to address what it calls the “root cause” of the conflict. While insisting on continuing military actions, it also claims readiness for peace talks, stipulating that Ukraine must concede more territory, disarm, and avoid military alliances with the West. Kiev views these terms as tantamount to surrender, leaving them vulnerable to future attacks.
