Milwaukee Bucks Coach Discusses Giannis’ Future Amid Speculation
Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers remains in touch with Giannis Antetokounmpo, even as discussions about the star player’s future with the team intensify.
Giannis is currently in the first year of a three-year, $175 million extension. However, after the Bucks faced yet another first-round playoff exit, many are wondering about his long-term plans with the franchise.
Rivers mentioned, “I always talk to him,” although he didn’t elaborate on the specifics of their conversations.
Adding to the team’s woes, co-star Damian Lillard suffered an Achilles injury during the playoffs. It’s a tough situation. Lillard is set to earn $54 million next season, which complicates the Bucks’ financial flexibility as they commit significant salary cap space to aging guards, particularly those who have turned 35 this year.
The Bucks’ struggles in the playoffs, combined with an aging roster and limited draft assets, are fueling speculation about possible changes for the team that won the NBA championship in 2021.
Rivers, who took over as head coach mid-season last year, finds himself navigating a tricky landscape. There are questions about his future if the Bucks decide a complete rebuild is necessary.
Giannis, known for drawing significant interest from around the league, may indeed attract attention should he become available for trade.
This season, the two-time NBA MVP delivered impressive stats, averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks. He shot a remarkable 60% from the field, helping Milwaukee achieve a solid 48-34 record, which placed them as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the Pacers eliminated the Bucks in five games.
