Oliver Bearman faces significant grid penalty at F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Oliver Bearman’s Challenging Monaco Grand Prix Debut

Oliver Bearman, a rookie driver for Haas, faces a tougher challenge in his first Monaco Grand Prix. He received a significant 10-place grid penalty following an incident during the second practice session on the streets of Monte Carlo.

After FP2, race officials called Bearman in for a discussion about an event that occurred halfway through the session. Following a crash by Oscar Piastri that brought out the red flag, video replays suggested that Bearman attempted to overtake Carlos Sainz Jr. while the red flag was still displayed.

Following input from Bearman and his team, as well as a review of footage and data, the stewards decided to impose the grid penalty.

In a statement from race officials, Bearman explained that he had faced a split-second decision. He noted that he saw the red flag but chose not to brake suddenly, believing it would be more dangerous in that moment. He felt that his actions were the safer option.

However, officials rejected his argument, emphasizing that the session had been flagged before he could complete the pass, and his team had informed him quite late. The video evidence showed clear indications of the red flag, both on the track and on his dashboard, ahead of the attempted overtake.

Pointing to the International Sports Code, officials highlighted that drivers must “quickly” slow down and return to the pits once a red flag is displayed. The rules explicitly prohibit overtaking during red flag conditions, and the presence of race and service vehicles on the track must be taken into account.

Stewards further criticized Bearman for not adequately slowing down and for trying to overtake another driver during a potentially dangerous situation.

They reiterated the critical safety purpose behind the red flag rules, especially at a challenging circuit like Monaco, where the unknowns can pose serious risks.

Finding no factors to lessen the penalty, officials issued Bearman the 10-place grid drop along with two points on his FIA super license. This brings his total to four penalty points after he previously received two for a collision with Franco Colapinto in Sao Paulo in 2024. Accumulating 12 penalty points within a calendar year will result in a race ban.
