Larry Sabato Highlights Often Overlooked Indicator That 2026 May Be Favorable for House Republicans

Insights on Future of House Control

In a recent podcast, Larry Sabato from the University of Virginia Political Center highlighted an often overlooked factor that might indicate Republicans could hold their House majority in the 2026 midterm elections. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) shared a poll in April suggesting that Republicans have a solid chance to defend—and perhaps even expand—their majority.

While Sabato, who identifies as a moderate, expressed skepticism about the Republicans keeping control, he emphasized that there is public sentiment supporting the GOP’s success. His analysis, featured in the Crystal Ball Newsletter on May 14, signaled that voters are hopeful for the party’s future. Interestingly, a recent Harvard poll revealed declining approval ratings for Congressional Democrats among young Americans.

Sabato noted, “It’s tough to predict if Republicans will hold their seats, but we’ve seen analysis from a respected political expert using different metrics who suggests Republicans could maintain both the House and Senate.” However, Sabato himself doesn’t quite agree with this view.

“I have my doubts. Some of my peers see it differently. I believe Democrats could indeed take control of the House. The margins are unpredictable—really hard to guess,” he commented. “If there’s a strong anti-Trump sentiment, we could see a shift of about 20 seats. If it’s more significant, we’re looking at another scenario akin to the anti-Trump wave in 2018.”

An analysis revealed that 58% of those surveyed foresaw the GOP keeping their seats. Back in March, the NRCC identified 26 House Democrats as potentially vulnerable, which could give Republicans a chance to increase their slim majority. A list of these targets was released around the same time by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

However, two analyses from April published in Crystal Ball suggested that Democrats might actually have a shot at gaining control in 2026. These evaluations look at key races that could tip the balance in Congress.
