Trump Signs Executive Orders to Boost Nuclear Energy
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders aimed at establishing energy dominance in the United States, specifically focusing on nuclear power. In a post on Truth Social, he shared links to three of these orders and highlighted one in particular, titled “Advance of the Nuclear Renaissance.”
The first order, “Reforming nuclear reactor testing at the Department of Energy,” addresses the federal government’s past decisions that limited domestic advances in nuclear reactor technology. The order emphasizes the need to accelerate innovation and reclaim leadership in advanced nuclear technology.
The U.S. had previously made strides in developing first-generation IV reactors for commercial use. However, federal policies effectively handed over advancements to overseas initiatives. This, according to the President, will change with a new focus on domestic production and innovation.
The second order is titled “The Nuclear Regulation Authority’s Order for Reform.” This directive aims to overhaul the structure and operations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
Noting recent energy crises in Europe, including blackouts in Spain and Portugal, Trump asserted the importance of reliable, dispatchable energy sources like nuclear power. His administration’s plan includes significant reforms to the NRC to help solidify U.S. dominance in the global nuclear industry, potentially creating many high-paying jobs and fostering prosperity.
The final order, “Revitalizing nuclear industrial bases,” underscores the urgency of preparing the workforce for a stronger nuclear energy sector. The objective is to increase fuel production, improve supply chains, and enhance reactor efficiency.
Decisive actions are essential for laying a strong foundation in the nuclear energy industry, promoting independent energy security, and ensuring a viable energy future for the nation.
Home Secretary Doug Burgham noted, via social media following the signing, that nuclear technology has evolved into a safer and more efficient option. He added that these executive orders enhance the U.S. energy agenda, promoting a future backed by reliable power.
Previously, Trump had established the National Energy Control Council in February to guide strategies aimed at making America a leader in energy production.
