North Korea’s Navy Faces Fallout After Warship Launch Failure
A recent report by state media reveals that a 5,000-ton destroyer from North Korea has prompted the detention of a shipyard official following a mishap during a warship launch. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that law enforcement has arrested the chief engineer of Jeongjin Shipyard over this incident.
Sources indicate that Prime Minister Kim Jong Un was visibly upset after observing the failed launch. It seems the incident not only damaged the warship but also struck a blow to national pride. Kim is reportedly determined to identify and punish those accountable for the mishap.
The failed launch occurred at the northeastern port of Jungjin on a Wednesday, causing embarrassment for Kim as he aimed to showcase military strength to a large audience. Following the unfortunate event, Kim criticized military officials and shipyard workers for what he described as ‘serious accidents and criminal acts’ resulting from gross negligence and unscientific approaches.
A satellite image depicts the warship on its side, draped in a blue tarp, with its rear end precariously hanging in the harbor while the front remains stuck on the launching ramp.
The flatbed vehicle meant to assist in the launch failed to function correctly, leading to an unbalanced shift that resulted in the ship being damaged before it could finally enter the water.
Kim, reacting swiftly, has ordered the restoration of the damaged vessel before a ruling party meeting scheduled for June, with reports suggesting that rehabilitation plans are already being set in motion.
In the context of increasing military pressure in the area, KCNA also stated that North Korean forces are prepared to handle various military threats from perceived adversaries. Under Kim’s leadership, North Korea continues to prioritize its military development as a response to what it sees as potential external hostilities.
