The Knicks are facing a significant issue with a 7-foot, 250-pound player. This remark comes from WFAN host Greg “Gio” Giannotti, who criticized the team’s big man following their defeat to the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
“[Towns is] a loser. That’s their main issue – the guys are a bunch of losers,” Giannotti stated. “He’s soft and constantly complains. Sure, he has moments where he shows he’s the best player on the court, but overall, he just doesn’t defend enough and seems to whine.”
Towns averaged 21.4 points and 11.6 rebounds in the postseason, shooting 48.8% from the field and 35.1% from three-point range. These numbers fall short compared to his regular-season averages of 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds, with shooting percentages of 52.6% and 42%, respectively.
At 29, Towns had a notable impact this season, yet he also frustrated many, including Giannotti. “He’s become one of the most frustrating players I’ve seen in this team,” he remarked. “I know he has incredible talent, and it’s just so disappointing that he isn’t living up to his full potential. I honestly don’t know if he ever will.”
Throughout his nine-year career, Towns has secured five All-Star selections and three All-NBA honors. However, that didn’t shield him from Giannotti’s criticism.
Remarks on Knicks’ Challenges Post-2025 NBA Playoffs
“The biggest obstacle the Knicks face in moving forward is their lingering reliance on Towns, which creates a bottleneck,” Giannotti elaborated. “Until they resolve that, they’ll struggle to advance.”
The blame game emerged after the Knicks’ 125-108 loss to the Pacers, with both Towns and captain Jalen Brunson cited as major disappointments of the series.
“Their main issue is that they expected Towns to perform better, but that’s not what happened,” Giannotti noted.
Towns, who was acquired from the Timberwolves in a significant trade, expressed remorse over not delivering a championship to the city. “It hurts not to bring a title to the city. We’ve got a lot of talent in that locker room, and we aim to put ourselves in this position again,” he said.
Moving forward, Towns is set to earn a base salary of $53 million for the 2025-26 season.
