Dabo Swinney Prepares for ACC Challenge Against Patriots-Inspired Teams
Dabo Swinney, Clemson’s head coach, is gearing up for a unique challenge next year, likening it to facing the “New England Patriots.” The Tigers will visit North Carolina, coached by Bill Belichick, on October 4, followed by a matchup at Boston University, where they’ll face former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.
During a conversation with ESPN’s Rece Davis, Swinney mentioned that since Belichick took the helm, he hasn’t felt significantly impacted by changes during their meetings.
“We’re playing the New England Patriots this year,” Swinney remarked lightheartedly. “We go to North Carolina, then to Boston University, so it really feels like we’re up against the whole Patriots organization for about a fortnight.”
Swinney joked about having a “secret sauce” that could lead them to victory. “We’ll need to figure out how to tackle the Y’all punt block team and more,” he added with a chuckle.
Since taking over at Clemson in 2008, Swinney has had considerable success against the Tar Heels, winning 14 games. Their most recent matchup ended with Clemson triumphing 31-20 in 2023. However, North Carolina has enjoyed a six-game winning streak against them. In the last ten encounters, North Carolina holds a 1-9 record against the Tigers and overall stands at 15-34-1 in their history.
Additionally, Swinney boasts an impressive 39-5 record against teams from North Carolina. Yet, as the landscape of college football evolves, it seems North Carolina may not be overly concerned about him in 2025, especially given Clemson’s recent struggles to reclaim championship glory since their last national title in 2018 with Deshaun Watson at quarterback.
