On May 29, Lind and the Harry Bradley Foundation honored Jimmy Lai with the prestigious Bradley Award. Lai, an entrepreneur who established significant businesses in China before his imprisonment, has become a key figure symbolizing freedom of speech in Hong Kong through his media ventures, including Apple Daily.
Amid concerns about the future of the Catholic Church under Xi Jinping, Lai’s situation has drawn attention. There are calls for Pope Leo to reconsider agreements made with the Chinese Communist Party, which some believe undermine the global church.
Lai has long advocated for the rights of Hong Kong residents. When Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997, there was a commitment under the Sino-British Joint Declaration to maintain the territory’s high degree of autonomy for 50 years. This included independence in law, judiciary, and freedom of assembly and speech.
The Bradley Foundation aims to recognize individuals supporting American values and Western traditions, often honoring those who have made notable contributions to culture or public policy. Highlighting Jimmy Lai’s plight serves to shed light on the harsh conditions faced by political prisoners.
Currently, Xi is encountering significant scrutiny due to Lai’s high-profile case, which has garnered global attention. Critics suggest that Xi’s oppressive tactics could deter investment in China, particularly given Lai’s frail state at age 77.
Past global dissidents often received significant international focus during their oppression, and Lai’s situation echoes that sentiment. Exiling him could enhance Xi’s reputation for being ruthless, resulting in increased vigilance from the global community regarding human rights in China.
Notably, President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have tied their legacies to advocating for Lai’s release, emphasizing its importance as a matter of faith and human rights. On accepting the Bradley Award, Lai’s son, Sebastian, reflected on the challenges his father faces while imprisoned in Hong Kong, noting the bravery required to oppose oppression.
As discussions continue about engaging with China, many are rallying around the hashtag #freejimmylai, calling for awareness and action on his behalf. The hope remains strong that initiatives like those from the Bradley Foundation help keep the focus on Lai’s plight.
