Child Rescued from Baggage Area at Newark Airport
A two-year-old child was saved from the baggage screening area at Newark Liberty International Airport last week. The incident occurred when the child reportedly fell off the passenger luggage drop-off conveyor belt while the mother was speaking to a JetBlue agent.
Officers from the Port Authority police began pursuing the child after he dropped into the checked baggage compartment. According to local reports, the officers were quick to recognize the potential danger and entered the conveyor system. After approximately four minutes, they located the boy heading toward the X-ray machine.
The toddler’s grandfather expressed gratitude towards the officer who had followed the child and confirmed that both the boy and his mother were okay. Interestingly, neither JetBlue nor the Port Authority in New York and New Jersey provided immediate comments regarding the incident.
Newark Airport Runway Set to Reopen
In other news, Newark Airport is set to reopen its runway on Monday, which is quite ahead of the previously scheduled timeline. Governor Phil Murphy announced that efforts were accelerated to complete the necessary construction by utilizing additional crews and allowing work around the clock.
While the airport has faced delays and air traffic control challenges recently, this reopening is seen as a major step toward restoring normal operations.
Murphy acknowledged the cooperation between the New Jersey Port Authority and the FAA, emphasizing efforts to enhance capacity at Newark Airport. He also mentioned the need for the U.S. Department of Transportation to invest in modernizing air traffic control systems and ensuring full staffing of air traffic controllers.
