Destruction of Russian Bombers Documented in New Satellite Imagery

Recent satellite imagery has revealed the extent of damage to a fleet of Russian bombers following Ukraine’s “Operation Spider Web” attack on Kremlin air bases over the weekend.

Analysts utilizing open-source data have identified significant debris where Bellaya Airfield once operated, which was home to several nuclear-capable bombers.

John Ford, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Research in California, noted that images from Capella Space corroborate Ukraine’s success in targeting the bomber fleet in the Irkutsk region.

The satellite images revealed the wreckage of at least two Tu-22 bombers, which are the same supersonic models used by Russia in strikes against Ukraine.

There were also reports of significant damage to at least four TU-95 bombers at Bellaya Airfield, showing a substantial blow to Russia’s aerial capabilities.

According to Bladeerflic, an intelligence analyst, the attack on the air force base was evidently successful. He stated that the targeted aircraft included both TU-22 and TU-95 models, which have been utilized in attacks on Ukraine.

Satellite images of the Ivanovo Air Force Base, located to the northeast of Moscow, have also surfaced, showcasing the scale of the assaults.

The Ukrainian intelligence agency, SBU, reported that Operation Spider Web struck 41 fighter jets across at least four bases. Some military bloggers have likened the offensive to a “Russian Pearl Harbor.”

Ukrainian officials hailed the operation as a significant success, indicating that a considerable portion of the bombers used to launch missile attacks has been incapacitated.

Reports suggest that around 34% of the Russian TU-95 bomber fleet, which is capable of holding nuclear weapons, has been destroyed. An official from Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council mentioned that the operation resulted in $7 billion in losses for Russia.

The War Institute, a think tank based in Washington, indicated that this bold attack might compel Moscow to rethink its air defense strategies in light of the recent developments. They suggested a potential reconfiguration of air defense systems, aiming to establish more mobile and responsive units against future Ukrainian drone strikes.
