Murder Case Solved 47 Years After Teacher Was Discovered Stabbed In School Hallway

Cold Case of Teacher’s Murder Resolved After Nearly 50 Years

Authorities have finally resolved the cold case of Diane Peterson, a 47-year-old teacher who was tragically found murdered near her classroom. This disclosure was made public on Monday.

On June 16, 1978, students discovered Peterson lying on the floor close to her classroom at Branham High School, as stated in a press release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

The report identified Harry Nickerson, then just 16, as the person responsible for killing Peterson. Nearly five decades later, both the District Attorney’s Office and the San Jose Police Department have confirmed this finding.

One statement reflected, “This marks the end of a horrifyingly tragic mystery. If Peterson hadn’t crossed paths with this violent teenager, he would be an elderly man today. I wish she could have been alive to see that.” It’s bittersweet, really. So many years later, justice finally feels like it’s being served.

Initially, Nickerson was considered a suspect after a booking photo from 1978 closely matched a composite sketch of the murderer. In 1983, the family of a Branham student claimed their son witnessed the murder and fingered Nickerson. However, the student later recanted.

Consequently, the case went cold. Attempts to use DNA testing between 2023 and 2024 also didn’t yield results, according to the county.

But recently, a significant breakthrough occurred when investigators revealed that Nickerson had been at his own home just minutes after the murder and admitted to having stabbed Peterson.

In the years following the incident, Nickerson faced multiple arrests and convictions for armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and other charges. He was even shot during an attempted drug robbery in 1984.

Nickerson passed away in 1993 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Peterson’s family expressed their gratitude to investigators for their perseverance throughout this long journey. One family member said, “Diane was a beautiful and wonderful person.” It’s clear the memories of her are still very much alive.
