The Tigers kicked off their impressive season with a stunning play on Monday, showcasing that their luck remains strong.
During a game where the Tigers dominated with an 8-0 score in just five innings, Chicago’s right fielder Joshua Palacios chased a foul pop-up near the third-base dugout.
Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler tried to make a sliding catch, but the ball slipped from his grasp.
Surprisingly, it bounced right into the hands of Zack McKinstry, who was just a few feet away.
Was it a stroke of luck, or just an impressive display of teamwork and timing?
Perhaps a bit of both for the Tigers, who hold the best record in baseball at 40-21, leading the Guardians in the AL Central by 6½ games.
As the Tigers’ announcer Jason Benetti remarked during the local broadcast: “I mean, they’ll do birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, anniversaries too! Dingler-Mckinstry juggling team – book Japan!”
McKinstry looked astonished as he caught the ball.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who pitched six innings allowing just one run, couldn’t help but laugh at the unexpected play.
This catch was just one of many highlights in the Tigers’ blowout against the struggling White Sox.
Designated hitter Kelly Carpenter really shined, hitting three home runs. Every player except McKinstry managed at least one hit.
Yet, with such a remarkable catch, McKinstry made up for his quiet night at bat.
With three more games ahead against the 18-42 White Sox, the Tigers seem poised to keep their momentum going, having won seven of their last eight games.
