Jim Marshall, NFL Champion, Passes Away
Jim Marshall, a former Minnesota Vikings player and a member of the renowned “Purple People Eaters,” has died at the age of 87. His wife, Susan, shared the news following his lengthy hospitalization.
Originally from Kentucky, Marshall was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 1960 NFL Draft. He went on to have a distinguished 20-year career, mostly spent with the Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings organization expressed its sorrow in a statement, noting that “the entire Minnesota Viking organization laments the loss of Jim Marshall.” They highlighted his embodiment of toughness, friendship, and passion—qualities that resonate deeply in the team’s history.
Marshall earned widespread respect for his exceptional durability and quiet leadership throughout his career, and he was a cornerstone for the franchise from the very beginning.
His impact on the Vikings extended well beyond his playing days. “Jim will always be remembered as an incredible player and person,” the team added, extending their condolences to his wife and loved ones.
During his time in the NFL, Marshall set several records, including an impressive streak of 282 consecutive games played—this was a record that stood until 2010 when Brett Favre surpassed it. He also holds the record for the most fumble recoveries in NFL history, with 29.
Marshall’s lengthy career included 19 seasons with the Vikings, and he played a pivotal role in the team’s four Super Bowl appearances. He also won the NFL Championship in 1969, just a year before the league merged.
