Protests Planned in Egypt Against Israeli Actions in Gaza
Progressive International, an activist group, has announced an eight-day protest scheduled to begin on June 15 in Egypt. The aim is to “break the Israeli lockdown” currently affecting the Gaza Strip.
The event, titled “Because of the Immediate End of Gaza’s Genocide,” will advocate for a comprehensive embargo on Israel and a full boycott against Israeli violence, occupation, and apartheid. March participants are expected to converge near the Rafah border, even amidst Israel’s strategic lockdown.
According to Progressive International, the global response to the Gaza situation has been inadequate. They assert that this march can shift government perspectives—from merely recognizing Israeli violations to taking substantial actions that address breaches of international humanitarian law.
Moreover, the group is encouraging the adoption of “boycotts, divestments, and sanctions” (BDS) aimed at restricting Israeli aid and support on a global scale.
This upcoming march follows an initiative led by climate activist Greta Thunberg against the Israeli blockade. Thunberg has joined activists, including actor Liam Cunningham from “Game of Thrones,” aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition ship “Madleen” to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Progressive International’s event comes amid a concerning rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S., including an attack during a pro-Israel demonstration in Colorado. Recent reports highlight a series of violent episodes, notably the tragic murder of two Israeli embassy staff near a Jewish museum in the U.S.
Major news outlets have recently revised their coverage of the ongoing Gaza conflict, correcting claims regarding Israeli forces and the death toll in Gaza related to U.S. aid locations.
This current conflict began with a surprising attack by Hamas on southern Israel during Jewish holidays in October 2023.
The march to Gaza is characterized as a “civic, non-political, independent movement” that aims to represent the diverse voices and humanitarian concerns of the populace. Participating American organizations include groups focused on addressing genocide and advocating for Palestinian justice.
