Athlete criticizes CIF for disqualifying celebrations during transgender athlete victories

California athlete Clara Adams, alongside her father, has voiced concerns after the California Interstate Governance Federation (CIF) stripped her of her state title during a celebration. This came right after trans-athlete AB Hernandez secured two gold medals at the national championships last weekend.

Adams was disqualified for her choice of celebration, which involved spraying fire extinguishers into her shoes after winning the girls’ 400m race. On the other hand, Hernandez excelled in the high jump and triple jump, also finishing second in the long jump, even amid tensions over President Donald Trump’s order for men to pursue action against women’s sports before the event.

In an interview on Fox News’ Wilcaine Show, Adams expressed her perplexity over the situation. “It’s just hard to wrap my head around,” she said, indicating she now has concerns about competing against biological males in the future. “It feels uneven. I mean, what I did was met with a DQ, but this situation… it’s considered acceptable?”

Her father, David Adams, shared his thoughts during the same interview. He reflected on Hernandez’s skills, acknowledging her talent while expressing disappointment over the CIF’s decision. “I watched AB jump. She’s an impressive athlete,” he mentioned, but felt their family had been treated unfairly.

David Adams also raised a critical point about racial perceptions in sports celebrations. “When a white athlete celebrates, it’s seen as passion, but for others, it’s labeled differently, sometimes derogatorily,” he argued, questioning why the standards seem to vary based on race.

Recently, Trump issued a warning to California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, threatening to cut federal funding if trans athletes participated in women’s competitions. In response, the CIF adjusted its rules, resulting in Hernandez sharing a podium with another female athlete who finished just behind her in the high jump.

A recent poll from the California Institute of Public Policy revealed that many residents, including over 70% of school parents, are against biological male trans athletes competing in women’s sports. The data indicates a significant majority favoring competition in alignment with athletes’ gender assigned at birth. In March, Newsom echoed similar sentiments, stating he finds it “deeply unfair” for trans athletes to compete in women’s sports.
