Elon Musk Criticizes Trump’s Major Legislative Effort
Elon Musk, previously seen as a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has voiced his disapproval regarding one of the administration’s prominent legislative initiatives.
In recent weeks, Musk has expressed his dissatisfaction with Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” ultimately labeling the former president as “nasty and hateful” shortly after he stepped away from Doge.
“I can’t keep quiet about this anymore,” Musk stated. “This enormous, excessive Congressional spending bill is truly distasteful. I’m embarrassed by those who supported it. You all were mistaken, and deep down, you know it too.”
Musk’s concerns seem to echo those of Republican critics, including Kentucky’s Rep. Thomas Massey and Sen. Rand Paul. However, some Republican lawmakers, like Rep. Chip Roy from Texas, have suggested that Musk’s opposition could be tied to how the bill might negatively impact his business interests.
“I’m not sure if Elon appreciates how much we are cutting subsidies all around,” Roy remarked in a recent discussion. “All future subsidies for electric vehicles, solar panels, and other renewable energies are primarily being eliminated.”
The current proposal terminates a federal tax credit of $7,500 for new electric vehicles and a $4,000 credit for used ones. Additionally, it withdraws a $1,000 credit for installing electric vehicle chargers.
Interestingly, Musk’s companies have benefited from substantial government support. Reports indicate that his operations received a staggering $38 billion from government funding, with Tesla alone getting $11.4 billion from federal and state sources.
In the wake of Musk’s remarks, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) acknowledged that Musk’s businesses could face adverse effects from the bill. “It’s not personal,” Johnson said. “I recognize that electric vehicle mandates are crucial for him, but the government shouldn’t be funding these incentives anymore; it’s part of the Green New Deal, and it will impact his ventures.”
