US and China dispute the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square tragedy

Tiananmen Square’s 36th Anniversary

Graphic Video Warning: June 4th marks the 36th anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on democratic protesters at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

The ongoing exchange between Washington and Beijing on this anniversary of the tragic events underscores a persistent divide between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Western democratic ideals.

On the evening before, which was Wednesday morning in China, Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a statement condemning the CCP’s actions, claiming they “actively censor the facts” and emphasized, “the world will never forget.” He remarked, “Today, we honor the bravery of the Chinese citizens who lost their lives while fighting for basic freedoms. Their resolve, in the face of clear danger, serves as a reminder that ideals of freedom and democracy are universal, not confined to America alone, and they cannot be erased by the CCP.”

Trump recently commented on Xi, stating he is “very tough” and “very difficult to make a deal.”

However, the following day, China’s Foreign Ministry pushed back against Rubio’s remarks, accusing him of “maliciously distorting historical facts.” A Chinese spokesperson, Lin Zian, stated that Rubio’s words represented a “serious interference in China’s internal affairs,” and noted that Beijing has filed a formal complaint with the U.S.

The 36th anniversary serves as a reminder of the day the Chinese government intervened to halt weeks of protests led by students seeking political freedoms.

The images from that day show tanks firing on unarmed crowds advocating for democratic reforms. While the exact death toll remains uncertain, it is commonly believed that hundreds were killed, with estimates exceeding 1,000 civilian casualties.

The Chinese government has since attempted to obscure the events of that day, publicly acknowledging the tragedy while simultaneously erasing its presence from media and online platforms. They have strengthened security during the anniversary, with reports of heightened measures near the Wannan Cemetery, where some victims are memorialized.

Images have surfaced again showing security forces stationed at Tiananmen Square, which, although mostly empty, evokes a somber reflection on that fateful day.
