Liberal media twists Sen. Ernst's town hall comments on death as Iowa Democrats take action

Iowa Democrats and various media outlets appear intent on framing Joni Ernst as unyielding as she gears up to challenge Sen. Joni Ernst (R) for reelection next year.

During a recent City Hall meeting in Parkersburg, Iowa, Ernst faced a barrage of questions from an animated audience, including inquiries about Medicaid adjustments tied to a settlement bill. She clarified that these changes aim to address overpayments and ensure that ineligible individuals, such as millions of undocumented immigrants, don’t continue to receive funds. Ernst reassured that those who are eligible and in need will still receive support.

In a tense moment, an audience member—later identified as a radical Democrat seeking a seat in the Iowa House—shouted, “People will die.”

Ernst paused her comprehensive reply to directly address the interruption, which had been labeled as “astroturf” by management and budget director Russell, and echoed by others, including Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY). She responded, “Well, we will all die for heaven.”

Media outlets have picked up on the senator’s viral remarks, often depicting her as calmly defending Medicaid cuts. For instance, the Associated Press highlighted her assurance that Americans are not subject to “one, big, beautiful bill.”

As an example, one report quoted Ernst stating, “Well, we’re all going to die,” and another outlet phrased it as “Ernst seems to ignore your concerns about Medicaid.” Additionally, another piece mentioned Ernst’s comments in a way that suggested she casually dismissed the fears of those affected by potential Medicaid cuts.

Local reports featured reactions from two men—identified as fathers who depend on Medicaid—expressing their outrage towards Ernst’s comments and calling for accountability from Republican leaders.

CNN’s Dana Bash also discussed Ernst’s statements during a show, giving Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) space to criticize the Republican stance.

Murphy said, “There are only two certainties: death and taxes,” pointing out that everyone in the crowd understood mortality. “Whether they die at 40 or live into their 80s or 90s, I just hope Ernst and others recognize the immorality of their actions.”

Meanwhile, Democrat Iowa Rep. JD Scholten has announced his candidacy to challenge Ernst in the upcoming Senate race.

Scholten, who previously ran for Congress, remarked that he intends to bring better leadership to the state, criticizing Ernst’s handling of the situation.

In response to the backlash, Ernst stated she felt it necessary to apologize for her earlier comment, saying she mistakenly thought everyone understood the inevitability of death. She added, “So I apologize. I’m grateful I don’t need to explain the tooth fairy.”

Despite her attempts to clarify and mitigate the fallout from her comments, she remains a focal point for criticism.

An Ernst spokesperson defended her by stating, “While Democrats are focused on Medicaid integrity, Senator Ernst is dedicated to enhancing the lives of all Iowans.” The spokesperson added, “There are only two certainties: death and taxes. She is committed to keeping Iowans’ hard-earned money in their pockets while reducing burdens and protecting benefits from misuse.”
