Trump Signs Declaration Impacting Harvard Student Visas
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump enacted a declaration addressing Harvard University’s foreign student exchange program, stirring further controversy between the administration and Ivy League institutions.
The declaration instructs the State Department to “revoke” current academic or exchange visas for certain Harvard students. Trump emphasized, “Admission to the US for educational purposes is a privilege, not a right,” linking this privilege to adherence to federal laws. He pointed out that Harvard had failed in this regard.
This new rule does not apply to students in the Student Exchange Visa Program (SEVP) from other universities and makes exceptions for those considered to be acting in the national interest.
The State Department has stated it is currently reviewing all visa holders linked to Harvard.
Last month, the department announced it would begin evaluating not only student visas but also all visa statuses related to Harvard in an effort to identify potential security risks or abuses within the visa system.
The declaration noted Harvard’s historical ties to foreign entities and potential extremism.
Harvard recently struggled to provide adequate information to the Department of Homeland Security regarding specific activities of foreign students, indicating some missing data related to only three students. The university acknowledged its links with foreign adversaries, revealing that it has received over $150 million from China alone.
In fact, Harvard has engaged in research projects involving individuals connected to China’s Communist Party, potentially aiding the country’s military advancements.
Trump claimed that students from certain countries receive a “free” education, drawing attention to financial aspects.
The administration has also accused Harvard of failing to adequately address anti-Semitism on campus. According to the declaration, there has been a notable rise in crime at Harvard, while some violations appear to go unregulated.
In response, Harvard officials have alleged that this administration is retaliating by moving to withhold taxpayer-funded research grants, implementing stricter regulations for international students, and examining discrimination claims regarding various employee demographics.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Harvard for a response.
