NAACP Cleveland Awards School Board Members Defying Anti-DEI Policy
The head of the NAACP in Cleveland, Ohio, was recently recorded discussing her organization’s decision to award a “justice” accolade to members of the state’s school board who resist the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in schools.
“In Ohio, we have school board members who truly understand what students need,” she explained. “Some have openly refused to endorse what I consider immoral directives from the president concerning anti-DEI and anti-diversity orders.” This was stated during a meeting that was shared widely.
“Through our Teaching Truth of Action initiative, we recognize those board members who stand up and say no—we won’t sign these harmful agreements. Student welfare is our top priority,” she added.
Numerous Ohio school districts have aligned with others across the United States in rejecting federal mandates about DEI practices. The federal government recently indicated that certain educational institutions are not complying with these regulations, which could lead to them losing federal funding if they don’t adhere to Trump’s executive orders prohibiting DEI initiatives. Nonetheless, the NAACP has shown appreciation to several districts for their stance.
Taxes Linked to Controversial DEI Contracts
The NAACP plans to collaborate with the ZINN Education Project for a “Teaching Truth Day of Action” event on June 7. This event promotes awards for board members who refused to sign an anti-DEI pledge. During a Zoom call, the NAACP leader highlighted her ongoing efforts, wearing a pin that symbolizes the judicial award they give out. The awards will be presented to members from three districts, which include Cincinnati and Shaker Heights.
“We want to encourage everyone: don’t be intimidated. We’re in a democracy that needs to be safeguarded,” she emphasized.
In response to the video, one local parent and lawyer expressed disapproval, stating that the NAACP’s actions directly encourage defiance against executive orders that aim to remove divisive educational mandates.
The Department of Education under Trump has warned that failure to eliminate DEI policies could result in losing federal funding. An executive order issued earlier condemned what it described as “radical indoctrination” in schools and instructed investigations into institutions that promote specific contentious materials.
As these debates continue, voices from both sides are emerging. Some argue that disregarding these laws jeopardizes funding crucial for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, while others see the NAACP’s actions as vital for fostering inclusive education.
