Jay Harris Announces Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
ESPN broadcaster Jay Harris revealed on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled for surgery next week to address the condition.
Harris, who has been a familiar face on shows like “Good Morning America,” shared his journey during a conversation with former New York Giants player Michael Strahan.
“I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” he told Strahan. “I underwent surgery on Tuesday and have taken a month off from ‘SportsCenter’ for recovery. After that, I’ll be back, stronger than ever.”
He expressed that his doctors are “very optimistic” about his recovery, noting that nothing had spread based on his latest scans. He remains hopeful that this will resolve his health issues for good.
At 60, Harris aims to raise awareness about prostate health and encourages men to prioritize regular medical check-ups. He shared a personal message about his diagnosis, stating, “My goal is to normalize this conversation and connect with others who want to offer guidance, as it was given to me.”
Harris has leaned on his colleagues, like Hannah Storm and Brian Custer, for support, referencing their own experiences with serious health concerns. He highlights the importance of sharing stories and being open about health challenges.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst at Fox News, has previously stressed the necessity of regular screenings, citing a decline in such practices. He emphasized that early diagnosis is key to improving outcomes for patients with prostate cancer.
Harris’s situation reflects a growing conversation around men’s health and the significance of seeking medical advice. As he looks towards recovery, his efforts to raise awareness could influence others to take proactive steps in their health journeys.
