Early Thursday, Russia executed a drone strike in Ukraine that resulted in five fatalities. This attack came just a day after discussions between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump described their conversation as “good,” but he acknowledged that the hour-long discussion didn’t bring about “immediate peace.” He mentioned the ongoing strikes were retaliatory, linked to Ukrainian attacks on Russian airspace over the weekend.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian forces targeted the town of Prilki in the central Chernichv area, causing fatalities and injuring at least nine others. Victims included local rescue personnel, according to various sources. Zelensky’s somber update noted the heartbreaking loss of a man’s wife, daughter, and one-year-old grandson, marking a grim milestone of 632 child casualties in this ongoing conflict.
Zelensky condemned the incident as a terrorist attack, suggesting it would likely lead to further sanctions against Russia. He declared, “Russia consistently seeks to gain time to keep its violent actions going. When it senses global weakness, it strikes again.”
In response, Russian officials defended the strike. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, labeled the Ukrainian administration as terrorist, citing their actions during a recent attack against civilian targets.
Global leaders have been urging Putin to de-escalate the conflict, even as there have been discussions about a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump cautioned that his counterpart has been “playing with fire” lately, suggesting that things could have been much worse for Russia if it weren’t for his influence. “He’s playing with fire!” he emphasized.
Furthermore, Trump implied that the escalation of attacks on Ukraine indicated a troubling shift in Putin’s mental state, categorizing him as “absolutely crazy” and reiterating concerns over Eastern European violence.
This week, the Kremlin promptly dismissed the idea of a meeting involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky, despite Trump’s invitation for such a gathering.
