Saquon Barkley, featured on the Madden cover, reveals surprising retirement news

Saquon Barkley’s Career and Future Considerations

After surpassing the 2,000-yard rushing mark during the 2024 regular season, Saquon Barkley has landed a spot on the cover of “Madden NFL 26.” He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, and his impressive first year with the team garnered him both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. At 28, many believe he is at the peak of his career heading into the 2025 season. However, he recently hinted that his departure from the game could be sudden.

In a recent appearance on former NFL player Chris Long’s podcast, Barkley was questioned about whether he would retire while still in his prime. He responded cautiously, saying he might retire from the game but didn’t foresee losing his passion for football.

Barkley referenced the unexpected retirement of Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders in 1998. He expressed admiration for Sanders, remarking on how fiercely competitive nature drives athletes. He mused that, similar to Sanders, his exit from the sport might come surprisingly—a moment where he might simply say, “Yeah, I’m done.”

Sanders ended his career with an impressive 15,269 rushing yards, needing just under 1,500 yards to catch Walter Payton’s rushing record at that time. Currently, Emmitt Smith holds the top position on the all-time list.

The Eagles recognized Barkley’s successful 2024 season with a noteworthy two-year contract extension. As he enters the 2025 season, he boasts 7,216 career rushing yards and played an integral role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory.

While Barkley has already made a significant impact in his seven NFL seasons, Sanders’ 10-year career continues to draw parallels and intrigue among fans and analysts alike.
